Drawing from Elizabeth George’s book “A Woman After God’s Own Heart.”

A life rooted in prayer is a life rooted in God. Prayer isn’t just a habit we check off a list. It is the posture of a heart leaning toward heaven, choosing to trust, listen, and rest in the presence of the Almighty. A mother after God’s heart must cultivate regular, persistent, faith-filled prayer. When we do, God begins to transform us from the inside out, as long as those around us.
Prayer is a practice that we must keep. Doing it often and daily, at all times, keeps us in check and in tune with God and what he wants for our lives.
Prayer Strengthens Our Faith
Prayer increases faith because it forces us to pause, to breathe, and to place everything (our burdens, worries, fears, and decisions) into God’s hands. It is a place of surrender. When we pray, we anchor ourselves in the reality that God is always nearby. Prayer opens our eyes to God’s presence, helping us experience Him in deeper and more intimate ways.
Prayer Changes Us
While prayer certainly changes circumstances, its first work is inside our hearts. It calms panic, lifts heaviness, and re-centers us on truth. Prayer changes things, but more importantly, prayer changes lives, and it changes us.
Through confession and honest conversation with God, prayer purifies our hearts. Regular confession keeps us spiritually aligned, helping us make decisions based not on fluctuating feelings but on God’s guidance. As we bring our decisions to Him, we learn to walk in His ways, letting Him direct our steps.
Prayer Shapes Our Relationships
Prayer doesn’t only change how we relate to God. It also transforms how we relate to others. Praying for people softens our hearts toward them. It improves our relationships and increases compassion, patience, and love towards them.
Prayer Cultivates Contentment and Trust
When we bring everything to God, we begin to see that He truly provides for our needs. Prayer teaches us contentment and total reliance on who God is. The Holy Spirit fills us with power for ministry, confidence to share God’s love, and joy that overflows into the lives of others.
Prayer Helps Us Walk in God’s Footsteps
Prayer gives us divine assurance and direction. As we seek God, He delights to guide our steps. We begin walking in His path with courage, purpose, and clarity. As we ask God first before making a decision, we allow for His direction in our lives.
Prayer makes a difference not only in our own lives but also in the lives of those around us. It shapes stories, influences history, and spreads hope.
Prayer is Ministry
Prayer helps us find purpose and eliminates useless, ineffective busyness and feelings of incompetence. It aligns us with God’s work, His timing, and His heart. Especially as busy mothers, prayer can be done in any form, in any way, at any time, and any place. Whether it’s while washing dishes, during sleepless nights, or while cleaning. Prayer can be woven into all we do. When we pray, we minister both to others and to ourselves.
Start With a Plan
If you want a stronger prayer life, begin with intention.
Start with a
- Prayer list
- Prayer journal
- Prayer book
- Prayer corner or space
- Guidance from the Holy Spirit
- Daily commitment to prayer
- Set-aside prayer time
It doesn’t matter how you start, even if you have a few words to say, just start. Even a few minutes each day can grow into a powerful, life-shaping habit. Prayer is not about perfection but a commitment, a willing, open heart ready to listen and pray.
