Twin Baby Essentials Checklist: What You Really Need When Buying for Twins

Preparing for twins can feel overwhelming, but having the right essentials makes all the difference.

These are the items we personally used and loved. When you’re buying for two babies at once, bulk buying and choosing versatile, natural products will save you time, money, and stress.

Quality, versatility, and quantity

When it comes to buying for twins, focus on quality, versatility, and quantity. Quality items last longer and can withstand many washes and constant use between two babies.

Versatile products are especially valuable because they can be used in multiple ways. This allows you to save space, money, and decision fatigue.

And when it comes to everyday essentials like wipes and diapers, buying in bulk is a must.

These are items you will use constantly, and having enough on hand makes life with twins far more manageable.

Diapering Essentials (Buy in Bulk)

  • Unscented baby wipes

I found the Woolworths unscented wipes to be the best:

    • They don’t tear easily
    • They’re not overly wet, so you don’t have to wait for baby’s bum to dry
    • They are non-plastic and gentle on sensitive skin
  • Unscented diapers

The Clicks brand diapers worked best for us.

  • Cloth diapers (optional)

We used cloth diapers for the first year until both twins started rejecting them.

Now at age two, we use Clicks pull-up pants, and I’m potty training in between.

  • Biodegradable nappy bin bags

Better for the environment and essential when you’re changing double the diapers.

Clothing Basics (Think Practical & Mess-Friendly)

  • Onesies in all sizes

    Preferably darker colours.

If possible, get onesie extenders; they allow you to use baby clothes longer.

  • Bibs – different types

You’ll need more than you think.

  • Receiving blankets (multi-use tip!)

The Woolworths cotton receiving blankets are perfect as full outfit bibs.

I simply place one over the baby’s clothes and tie a knot at the top for easy clean-up.

  • Cotton or knitted baby hats and socks

Especially important for newborns and preemies.

Towels, Blankets & Multi-Use Items

  • PEP Baby cotton towelling nappies

    Extremely versatile:

    • Clean-ups
    • Towels
    • Wipes
    • Mini blankets
    • Burp cloths
    • Bibs
  • Cotton baby blankets in different sizes

Lightweight ones for summer and slightly thicker ones for cooler days.

Natural Baby Care Essentials

  • Natural bum cream
  • Natural baby balm & lotion
  • Natural hair oil
  • Wooden, soft baby brush

Choosing natural products helped prevent rashes and irritation, especially with twins who have more frequent diaper changes.

Feeding & Breastfeeding Essentials (Especially for Twins)

  • Twin feeding pillow or pregnancy pillow

This is a lifesaver for tandem feeding and comfort.

  • Electric breast pump

If your twins are preemies, they may spend time in NICU.

If you plan to breastfeed, you’ll need:

    • A good-quality electric pump
    • Lots of bottles
  • Large breastfeeding cover

Preferably cotton or linen, lightweight, breathable, and not see-through.

Getting Out & About With Twins

  • A big nappy bag

I prefer a backpack-style nappy bag to keep my hands free.

  • Two baby carriers

    • Hemp, cotton, or stretchy fabric carriers work best
    • Ideal for bonding and hands-free movement
  • Strong twin stroller

We used a brand similar to Belecoo brand for a long time, even when they were two.

    I don’t prefer side-by-side twin prams because:

    • They’re bulky
    • You can’t fit into certain shops

👉 A top-and-bottom (inline) twin stroller is much more practical.

    Twin Mama Tip

If you’ll use it daily and constantly for two babies, buy more than you think you need. Running out with twins is harder than buying a little extra.
