Jochebed: A Story of Brave Motherhood, Trust in God, and Raising Leaders
Jochebed was the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. Her story is found in Exodus 1 and 2. She lived during a dangerous time when Pharaoh ordered that all Hebrew baby boys be killed. Even in this fear-filled situation, Jochebed trusted God and showed great courage. Her faith helped protect her children and shaped them into leaders God would later use in powerful ways.
1. Choosing Courage Over Fear
Jochebed lived under Pharaoh’s cruel law, but she refused to obey it. She hid her baby son, Moses, for three months to protect his life.
Key Points:
- Jochebed feared God more than she feared Pharaoh.
- She chose to protect her child, even when it put her own life at risk.
- Her story encourages mothers to trust God and choose faith, even when the world is against them.
2. Raising Leaders by Example (Miriam’s Role)
Jochebed’s faith showed clearly in her daughter, Miriam. When Moses was placed in the river, Miriam stayed nearby to watch over him.
Key Points:
- When Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby, Miriam bravely spoke up.
- She wisely suggested finding a Hebrew woman to nurse the child.
- This shows that Jochebed raised children who were confident, wise, and bold.
- Moses became a deliverer, Aaron became a priest, and Miriam became a prophetess.
3. Trusting God While Doing Her Part
When Jochebed could no longer hide Moses, she made a waterproof basket and placed him in the Nile River.
Key Points:
- She did everything she could to protect her child.
- Then she trusted God with what she could no longer control.
- Her actions were like a prayer and faith shown through action.
4. Letting Go and Trusting God’s Plan
The hardest part was not putting Moses in the river but letting him go to live in Pharaoh’s palace later on.
Key Points:
- Jochebed had to give up raising Moses every day.
- She trusted that God’s plan for her son was bigger than her own desires.
- This teaches mothers to raise their children well, then release them into God’s hands.
5. God’s Help in an Unexpected Way
Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses and chose to save him. Through Miriam’s bravery, Jochebed was asked to nurse her own son and was even paid to do it.
Key Points:
- God worked inside Pharaoh’s own family to protect Moses.
- God turned danger into a blessing.
- This shows that God hears the prayers and cries of mothers.
6. A Faith That Changed History
Jochebed is honored in Hebrews 11:23 for her faith. Her brave choices did not just save one child but saved a whole nation.
Key Points:
- A mother’s faith can affect future generations.
- Trusting God can lead to freedom, purpose, and fulfilled promises.
- Jochebed’s life shows the power of courage, faith, and surrender to God.
