I’m always intrigued by birds. I remember clearly the day the name for my business came to me, ‘Natural Nest,’ but that’s a story for another day.
Nesting during pregnancy is an instinct marked by a surge of energy and a strong desire to prepare the home for a baby’s arrival, often peaking in the third trimester. And that got me connecting the dots:

Birds = Nest = Homemaking.
Birds “home-make” in ways that are simple, yet deeply purposeful. Here’s how they care for their homes:
Building the Nest: Most birds build nests to lay eggs and raise their young using carefully chosen materials. Depending on the species, they use: Twigs and sticks Grass and leaves, mud, moss, feathers or soft fur for lining Even string or paper in cities Some birds weave intricate designs (like weaver birds). They fly back and forth, sourcing what they need with patience and intention to create a safe space for life. “Unless the Lord builds a house, They who build it labor in vain; Unless the Lord guards a city, The watchman stays awake in vain.” â€â€Psalm‬ â€127‬:â€1‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Choosing a Safe Location: Birds are thoughtful about placement. They choose: High branches in trees Cliffs Dense bushes Tree cavities Under roof edges or bridges Safety from predators and harsh weather is always a priority. “Then my people will live in a peaceful settlement, In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed resting places;” â€â€Isaiah‬ â€32‬:â€18‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Keeping It Clean: Many birds keep their nests surprisingly clean: They remove eggshells after hatching. They carry away waste sacs from their young to prevent odor and bacteria. They add fresh materials if the nest becomes worn. Cleanliness is about protecting your home and your loved ones, your spirituality and health. “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let’s cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” â€â€2 Corinthians‬ â€7‬:â€1‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Protecting the Home: Birds guard their nests fiercely: Sounding alarm calls Pretending to be injured to distract predators Attacking intruders, even much larger animals “In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, Lord, have me dwell in safety.” â€â€Psalm‬ â€4‬:â€8‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Repairing and Reusing: Some birds reuse and repair nests season after season. Others start fresh each year. Eagles, for example, add to the same nest annually until it becomes massive as a generational home built layer by layer. “The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.” â€â€Proverbs‬ â€14‬:â€1‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Feeding Their Young: “The early bird catches the worm.” Birds rise early and spend their days sourcing food for their young. They work diligently during daylight hours, then rest at night. Provision. Rhythm. Balance. “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” â€â€1 Timothy‬ â€5‬:â€8‬ â€NASB2020‬‬ In short, a bird cares for its home by: Building carefully. Choosing wisely. Cleaning consistently. Protecting fiercely. Providing faithfully. What do we learn from birds about Nesting AKA Homemaking?
Trust and Dependence: Birds don’t store up wealth or worry about tomorrow the way humans do. Yet they survive, adapt, and find what they need. Lesson: Live with trust instead of constant anxiety. Trust in God to care for your family’s needs. “Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they?” â€â€Matthew‬ â€6‬:â€26‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Diligence and Preparation: Many birds build carefully crafted nests, migrate thousands of miles, and prepare for seasonal change. Lesson: Work faithfully and prepare wisely for what’s ahead.
Care for Home and Family: Parent birds feed their young tirelessly, protect them fiercely, and teach them to fly. Lesson: Nurture, protect, and prepare the next generation.
Community and Cooperation: Geese fly in formation to reduce wind resistance. Many birds warn others of danger. Lesson: Life is easier and stronger when we work together.
Resilience: Birds rebuild after storms. They start over without self-pity. Lesson: When life knocks things down, rebuild and keep moving forward.
Freedom with Responsibility: Birds are symbols of freedom, yet their freedom operates within rhythms, migration patterns, nesting seasons, daily routines. Lesson: True freedom includes order, rhythm, and purpose.
Praise Through Being: Birdsong fills the morning. Birds glorify simply by being what they were created to be. Lesson: Sometimes the greatest purpose is to live fully and authentically.
Beauty in the ordinary: Birds look for the ordinary things and turn them into a beautiful nest. Lesson: Be careful and mindful of the treasures you fill your home with. “And by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” â€â€Proverbs‬ â€24‬:â€4‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Tie yourself not to worldly things that rot away: Some male birds, like bowerbirds, will tear down or abandon their “home” structures if a female rejects them. Lesson: Build storehouses in Heaven daily by reading God’s Word and prayer. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;” â€â€Matthew‬ â€6‬:â€20‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Wake up early to catch the worm
Birds that feed early in the morning often have access to fresh food sources like worms and insects that are near the soil surface at dawn. Lesson: Being proactive (the “early bird”) ensures that the nest is ready for whatever comes. “She watches over the activities of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.” â€â€Proverbs‬ â€31‬:â€27‬ â€NASB2020‬‬ “And she rises while it is still night And gives food to her household, And portions to her attendants.” â€â€Proverbs‬ â€31‬:â€15‬ â€NASB2020‬‬ “She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.” â€â€Proverbs‬ â€31‬:â€21‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
May God give you the product of your hands, And let your works praise you in the gates. â€â€Proverbs‬ â€31‬:â€31‬ â€NASB2020‬‬
Amen.
