Stockpiling Before January & February:
How to Save Money and Start the Year Calm and Prepared.
"She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness."
Proverbs 31:27
Dear Mama, Let’s Stockpile Now So January and February Don’t Steal Your Peace.
There’s money in our hands, festive joy in the air, food on the table, and moments worth enjoying. And you deserve every bit of this happiness.
But let’s remind ourselves of something many of us already know:
January is usually a broke month.
And very often, February becomes a catch-up month, where we’re still trying to recover from January.
That’s why now is the perfect time to stockpile, save, and prepare. Not from fear, but from love, wisdom, and care for your family.
You can also start stockpiling in November with Black Friday specials, or intentionally throughout the year. The idea is to have enough running stock through the year to keep you going when things are quiet, when no money is coming in, or through the broke months when the things you need to pay for are more than your salary.
A Gift for Future You
In January, you will be tired. In February, you will still be stretching the budget and making up for January. School runs, work, routines, and real life come quickly after December.
Stockpiling now is like leaving a quiet gift for yourself—a reminder that you planned and thought with intention.
What You Already Have at Home (And Why It Helps)
Check what is in your pantry and write a list of what you need and what your family uses and spends on often, so that you can shop intentionally. Remember to buy what your family actually uses the most. There’s no need to stockpile things that will just sit on the shelf.
Go online and check the stores where you want to buy. Write the list down with pricing from the shops. Knowing what you already have helps you fill the gaps without overspending, making stockpiling feel manageable instead of overwhelming.
Also, remember that what and how you stockpile will depend on the amount of money you have available. Work with what you have. Be patient and consistent. Small things done consistently build up over time.
What You Can Buy with R2050.
Mama, if you have around R2050 to spend, here’s what you could stockpile for your family in a way that covers essentials and gives you peace of mind for January and February:

- Maize meal (5kg)
- Sugar (5kg)
- Long-life milk (x2 6-packs)
- Breakfast cereals: Weetbix 1.35kg and Coco Pops 350g
- Peanut butter 400g
- Tomato sauce (x2 6-packs)
- Oros x5 2L
- Mayonnaise x2
- Canned foods like baked beans (x2 6-packs)
- Toilet paper (48 2-ply bulk pack)
- Niknaks 20g x50
Total from Makro: about R1,330
Baby & Health
- Diapers x2 from Clicks (Clicks Pants) – R230
- Wipes from Woolworths x2 – R300
Household Essentials
- Cleaning supplies from Woolworths – R180
Total together: R2040
You can also add to your list:
- Canned tomatoes, fruit, and fish
- Pasta, flour, spreads, and snacks
- Rice (10kg)
- Baking powder / yeast
- Salt
With this amount, you’re creating a stocked-up home that saves money, reduces stress, and makes January and February feel much gentler.
Don’t Forget Health Essentials
Health items are easy to overlook until you suddenly need them.
If you can, stockpile:
- Multivitamins for adults and children
- Chronic or everyday medications
- Pain relief
- Cold & flu basics
- Allergy medication, if needed
Having these at home saves emergency pharmacy trips when money is tight.
Lighten January’s Bills Where You Can
If possible, use this season to reduce January pressure:
- Contribute toward January school fees
- Pay a portion of the levies, rent, or bond early
- Put an amount aside specifically for January expenses
- Better yet, if someone wants to buy you a gift, ask for a grocery store voucher, or they can buy a few groceries for your home.
Even small contributions now create breathing room later.
Stokvel
I’ve recently learned about the Stokvel account from Spar and Shoprite. It’s a card that you open at the shop, and for Spar, you save until November. The card is locked until November.
This is a nice way to save if you feel you are not disciplined enough to save on your own.
Save While You Spend
You don’t need large amounts to make a difference. Whatever you can save matters.
- Open a savings account, even a simple one.
- Save small amounts whenever possible.
- Keep savings out of sight if temptation is real.
Saving isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency.
A Gentle Pause Before Spending
Before an impulse buy, pause and ask yourself:
“If I don’t buy this, what could I stockpile or save instead?”
Often, the answer is peace. God’s peace carries you through January and February.
January doesn’t have to be survival mode. February doesn’t have to feel like you are constantly catching up.
You step into the new year calmer, steadier, and more confident.
Final Mama Reminder
Preparing makes you wise, nurturing, and intentional.
Enjoy the festive season. Celebrate, laugh, and treat yourself but do something different for next year, stockpile while you can. Be wise with your money.
